Traditional Vs. GenZ Alta: Which to Choose?

The all new “Alta Pen” has been going viral on different ecommerce platforms and social media platforms, being marketed as a smudge-proof, hassle-free, ultra smooth and travel-friendly alternative to traditional Alta formulations. 

The sleek packaging of the product and the influencer hype has quickly helped in luring the attention of GenZ buyers and noob content creators, as they chase viral reels and trends on social media. 

However, there’s a silent catastrophic detail that nobody cared to check peeling off the cheap paper label - the fact that this premium Alta pen is nothing more than a Permanent Red Marker! 

Baffled? Let’s dig in some more to find where this GenZ Alta pen went wrong! 

The viral Alta-pens are currently luring the attention of most GenZ buyers, noob content creators and reel makers for its travel-friendly design, smudge-proof property and long-lasting crimson tint against the traditional Alta Formulations. 

However, on close inspection it was found that these cheap Alta pens are actually Permanent Red Markers which are often made with drying alcohols like n-propanol, Diacetone alcohol and n-butyl alcohol. The interesting part is these drying alcohols are mostly used as chemical intermediaries of industrial dyes, meaning, these ingredients dilute industrial dyes (Tasar, Wiegand and Elsner, 2021). 

What’s tragic is that these industrial drying alcohols are chemical solvents that damage the skin barrier while stripping the skin of its natural moisturizing lipids, almost silently. According to Löffler et al. (2007), when the human skin is exposed to industrial drying alcohols for a longer span it weakens the skin barrier while accelerating TEWL (transepidermal water loss), resulting in dryness, irritation, inflammation and redness. 

So, applying these on skin is dangerous. 

Long before Alta Pens sabotaged the markets, traditional Alta was something sacred while being tied to values, customs and beliefs. They are more than a cosmetic product as it carries a long-woven history, craftsmanship and sensory experience, which cannot be replicated through convenience packaging, gimmicks or cheap sales tricks. 

Here’s how Traditional Alta is superior to the so-called ‘innovative’ Alta Pens:

• Gentle natural formulations: 

Traditional Alta formulations are mostly made with plant-based extracts which are gentle, natural and designed with both upholding the culture while caring for skin health. Most of the traditional Alta formulations are made from floral colorants and phenolic compounds like anthocyanins, which is mostly gentle on the skin, being natural (Câmara et al., 2022). Therefore, the use of traditional Alta formulations aid in preserving skin health as opposed to the synthetic ink and drying alcohol-infused Alta pens. 

• Skin compatibility: 

It is mostly used as a cosmetic on skin surface; so, making use of non-allergic compositions is highly preferable. In this regards, traditional Alta formulations are made with different natural ingredients like plant and flower extracts alongside being imbued with different humectants, making them safer to be used on human skin. Industrial inks and drying alcohols, damages the skin barrier and dehydrates the skin due to their corrosive nature (Fletcher, 2025). Therefore, using Alta pens infused with synthetic inks and industrial alcohols, instead of traditional Alta, results in dryness, irritation, redness, inflammation and often gets into the bloodstream through minor cuts or wounds on the skin surface, making them dangerous. 

• Emotional and cultural heritage: 

Traditional Alta formulations carry a deep-rooted emotional and cultural value as the ritual of applying this before a wedding dance performance or a festival is itself an experience. The act of applying Alta, mindfully, reflects sheer patience, artistry and a connection to the rich heritage of India. So, although it might seem a bit old-fashioned, no modern shortcuts can replace its authenticity, cultural depth, artistic flexibility, and a genuine connection to tradition.  

While viral trends and aesthetic-driven consumerism is flooding the internet, the sudden emergence of so-called innovative Alta Pens reflects how easily tradition is replaced by cheap marketing gimmicks. 

The case of Alta pens revealed that “All that glitters is not gold!” as beneath the flashy marketing and influencer hype, the concerns hide. These are made with drying alcohols, industrial dyes etc which are harmful to the skin as it damages skin barrier, accelerates TEWL and results to severe skin dehydration. 

Contrarily, traditional Alta formulations are more than cosmetic adornments as they are made with plant and floral extracts while symbolizing heritage, artistry and mindful rituals that are passed down the generations.
